Coming in May - "Les Miserables" (School Edition) - a story of true redemption “Les Miserables” is the story of Jean Valjean who has spent many years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister’s starving child. It is set in post-revolutionary France in the early and mid 1800’s, a time of social conflict fraught with extreme poverty and the dreams of freedom and justice for the people of France. As Valjean is released from prison, he is warned by the ever-righteous Inspector Javert not to break his parole, something Valjean finds difficult to do as he must show his “yellow ticket of leave” everywhere he goes, informing everyone that he is an ex-convict. Valjean ends up stealing silver from a bishop, but the bishop shows him mercy and grace and challenges him to become a better man. Valjean takes the challenge, and the story follows him as his life is transformed by this gesture of mercy. There are many interesting characters that come in and out of the story and several subplots that portray the themes of love, liberty, and the fight for freedom (and yes, there are a few battle scenes). You may enjoy the passion of the student revolutionaries fighting for a better France or the romance of “love at first sight”. Perhaps you will laugh at the greedy innkeepers or cry at the dreams that are lost. Hopefully, the message of grace will ring clear as you follow this enduring story. “Les Miserables” is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year…the longest running musical in history. Our students have been working very hard to prepare this Mt. Everest of musicals, and it has been my pleasure to work alongside each of them and Mr. Ragan to present to you this stunning musical and a night to remember. We hope you will join us on May 6th or 7th at 7pm. ~Michelle Hardin
